The Team
The Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team is responsible for optimizing portfolios to achieve foundation goals, engaging with partners and grantees, and identifying and analyzing grants to maximize foundation impact:- Portfolio Management: Optimize finite resources across portfolios to achieve foundation goals using a fluid capital market approach to fund priorities.
- Partners and Grantees: Engage in coordinated strategic and business analysis across funders and institutions with shared strategic objectives and strengthen partners to improve their capacity to execute.
- Grants: Assess value for money, identify and mitigate risk, and provide financial analysis to enhance grant impact.
The Africa team works to enable the foundation’s ambitious goals of scaling evidence-based interventions that target a range of diseases and socio-economic conditions which are endemic across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The team implements its responsibility through direct country engagement to deploy interventions and delivery models, and by building the partner architecture to replicate successful interventions and models across multiple countries. The Africa team currently has offices in Johannesburg, South Africa; Addis Abba, Ethiopia; and Abuja, Nigeria. Additionally, in 2024 the foundation plans to open offices in Senegal and Kenya.
The India team works with India’s objectives of improving the lives of its people. Our efforts in India focus on reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition; infectious diseases that disproportionately affect the poor; urban sanitation; agricultural development; gender equality, and digital financial inclusion. With a particular focus on Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, we work with partners to develop impactful and sustainable solutions to improve the quality and coverage of key services for the poor and vulnerable. The foundation has an office located in New Delhi.
Your Role
This is an exciting new role for the foundation and for our regional offices. The Deputy Director, Financial Planning & Analysis, Country Offices works closely with their divisions, the leaders, and specialists within the country offices and program strategy teams (PSTs) to support grant-making, pipeline management, strategic financial planning, and larger cross-organizational initiatives. This role will involve a balance of relationship management, people management, direct program team support, as well as thought-partnership to divisional leadership. The postholder will lead a team of finance staff who support the India and Africa country offices, and be responsible for providing leadership, and managing the team's portfolio of projects, quality of deliverables and important decisions, including the establishment of best practices.
This role will assist in the programmatic annual planning process. It will also develop and deliver a strategy to identify, prioritize, and meet information needs for program and operational staff, related to financial and grant data within the divisions and teams they support.
The postholder will be based in London, UK - we will also consider qualified candidates for this role to be located in one of our U.S. based offices. Additionally, this role will be expected to spend considerable amount of time in the various country offices as well as Seattle (if not located in Seattle).
The Deputy Director will report to the Seattle-based Program Chief Financial Officer (PCFO).
What You'll Do
In partnership with division leadership and alongside the PCFO, this role leads the program forecasting, current year budget management and planning process, and partners closely to design and implement the annual planning process for each division; ensuring that program deliverables conform to overall foundation needs.
Acts as financial advisor, providing financial and business expertise on their portfolios and key grant transactions. Partners with the PCFO to build and maintain positive relationships with program leadership, as both a thought partner and collaborator.
Leads the financial structuring of large and strategic grants, working closely with internal specialists (Program Officers and their FP&A team) and external partners (grantees) to negotiate and structure transactions that enhance impact. This may include partner organization due diligence.
Advises on organizational effectiveness topics relative to critical foundation partners.
Directly responsible for recruitment, retention and people management of Senior Finance Managers, Finance Managers and/or Associates that provide financial support to the country offices within a division. Communicates and manages performance expectations including goal alignment, giving, and seeking feedback, providing coaching, measuring progress, and holding people accountable. Cultivates team culture, by supporting employee development and recognizing achievement and lessons learned.

Leads input to grant portfolio management decisions in support of planning, forecasting and tradeoff decisions across strategies.
Leads or participates in cross-organizational projects and partners with peer leaders to drive foundation-wide initiatives both internal to finance and in partnership with cross-functional partners (i.e., program teams, business partners, etc.).
Leads cross-divisional projects to improve efficiencies and processes across FP&A.
Leads as a subject matter expert on business and financial topics to a variety of partners. Cultivates the sharing of best practices and the evolution of policies across finance and other divisions.
Responsible for investment reviews, partner engagement and portfolio management.
Your Experience
You are a creative, thoughtful, and curious leader who has an excellent track record of achievement in roles of increasing responsibility. You should be prepared to work across a diverse set of disciplines, bridging a wide range of expertise, with a demonstrated ability to work with agility, efficiency, and diplomacy in a dynamic environment. Additionally, we seek:
Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated senior level experience in strategic financial analysis and/or planning and leadership, particularly in evolving and expanding portfolios.
Technical and complex financial knowledge, including international finance and capital and currency markets.
Deep experience and understanding of risk management and organizational due diligence, ideally in low and middle-income countries.
Mastery of analytics skills, including financial modeling, decision modeling, developing pro forma financial statements, and data analysis.
Robust business analytical, quantitative, and modeling skills for broad variety of business models and transaction types.
Strong written and verbal communication skills that are appropriately right sized to relevant audiences.
Communicates sophisticated financial concepts to partners with a diverse set of backgrounds, including leadership, program staff, grantees, and other foundation operational resources.
Strong project management skills and ability to work on multiple projects - or support multiple teams - simultaneously.
Strong leadership and relationship management skills, and team management experience preferred, ideally in a matrixed and dynamic environment.
Success working with individuals at all levels of an organization (from junior to C-Level executives).
Professional presence and high degree of maturity, with a demonstrated ability to communicate and resolve issues effectively.
Skilled in group problem solving and collaboration to resolve problems involving internal and external partners in a matrixed environment.
Works with efficiency, diplomacy, and flexibility as part of a team with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
Highest level of integrity and leadership by example, helping to set the tone for the organization and demonstrate an affinity for creating and enabling an inclusive culture.
International finance experience/exposure preferred.

Willingness to travel up to 40% internationally.
